Audio Reactive Setup
Route audio into RenderWave, map bass/mid/treble to shader parameters, and dial in beat detection that hits on the kick.
Last updated May 2026
Connecting Audio Device
Select your audio input in Settings > Audio. RenderWave supports any Core Audio device including audio interfaces, microphones, and system audio loopback (via tools like BlackHole or Loopback).
Frequency Bands
- Bass - Low frequencies (kick, sub)
- Mid - Vocals, synths, guitars
- Treble - Hi-hats, cymbals, air
- Overall - Combined level
Beat Detection
Automatic beat detection analyzes transients to trigger effects on the beat. Adjust sensitivity in audio settings.
Mapping Parameters to Audio
Right-click any parameter slider and select "Map to Audio". Choose which frequency band controls the parameter and set the range. The slider becomes modulated in real time — manual moves still nudge the base value.
Routing Tips
Capturing system audio
macOS doesn't expose system audio as an input by default. Install a loopback driver (BlackHole 2ch is free) and select it as RenderWave's input to react to any audio playing on your Mac.
Live DJ feed
Take a pre-fader send or aux out from the mixer into a USB audio interface. Pick the interface input in Settings > Audio. Watch latency — set the smallest buffer your Mac can handle without dropouts.
Microphone reactivity
Onboard mic works for testing and live-room reactivity, but ambient noise dilutes the kick band. Use a directional or contact mic for cleaner bass triggering.
Permissions
RenderWave needs microphone permission in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone. If audio meters stay flat, that's the first thing to check.
